Schools’ GCSE alternatives ban

State schools will not be allowed to teach a range of qualifications that are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to GCSEs at private schools.

The ministerial decision opens up a divide between the two sectors over what pupils learn and could help private institutions attract more applicants, by differentiating the product that they offer.
