The first auction of carbon permits under a mandatory greenhouse gas trading scheme in the US was four times subscribed, the organisers said on Monday.

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a grouping of 10 US states, said that all 12.5m carbon permits on sale at last Thursday’s auction had been snapped up, with bids for nearly 52m permits.
