Executives at Germany’s small- to mid-sized engineering companies – the backbone of the country’s economy – have gained fresh hope that they can endure the worst order slump in decades, after spotting nascent signs of recovery.
At the Hanover fair, the world’s largest showcase of capital goods, the mood is sanguine despite a financial crisis that has hit these companies particularly hard, with orders dropping by up to 50 per cent in recent months.
