Europe needs a new human rights strategy

As European leaders head to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, they should be worried that their influence over human rights at the UN is in decline.

In the 1990s, European governments and US pushed the UN to value human rights over state sovereignty. This alliance broke down during the Bush era and Russia and China are pushing back hard – with mounting support among the UN’s members.
