Dead dictator still casts shadow on Turkmens

Two years after he died, a gold statue that Saparmurat Niyazov, the former president of Turkmenistan, built to himself still dominates the capital’s skyline, slowly rotating so that his face is forever in the sun.

Known as Turkmenbashi – or father of all Turkmens – Mr Niyazov still casts a significant shadow over the country he ruled for 21 years.
