London apologises for terror suspect rendition flights

David Miliband, Britain's foreign secretary, yesterday apologised to British parliamentarians after admitting that US "special rendition" flights had twice landed on British soil, in spite of earlier government assurances that this had not been the case.

In a statement to the House of Commons, Mr Miliband said on two occasions in 2002 US flights carrying terrorist suspects stopped to refuel at the airbase on the British Indian Ocean territory of Diego Garcia.
