Asian equity markets were battered on Thursday, with the pace of declines accelerating in the afternoon as investors grappled with fresh concerns over the global credit crisis and the extent of an economic slowdown in the US.

The dollar plunged in European trading below the Y100 mark to Y99.80, the lowest since September 1995. The dollar fell against other Asian currencies, with the Singapore dollar reaching a record high of 1.3818.
