Only by resigning do parliamentary private secretaries ever get noticed, so the Westminster joke goes.

By walking out of the government, albeit from its lowest rung, these parliamentary aides can make front-page headlines and, for a brief period, rock the government. In 2006, Tony Blair was forced to agree his departure, not after a high-profile political assassination but after the resignation of one junior minister, Tom Watson, and six PPSs.
