Hungary to let farmland soak up flood damage

Rescuers and volunteers spent the weekend reinforcing cracked flood defences across southeastern Europe as rivers swollen by rain and melting snow burst their banks in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary

But even as Hungary strengthens dykes containing the country’s most flood- prone river, the Tisza, it is planning to use farmland to hold up to a billion cubic metres of water to prevent flooding elsewhere.
