AgustaWestland, the helicopter maker, has entered into a ground-breaking partnership with the Ministry of Defence and won a £1bn order for 70 reconnaissance and maritime attack helicopters.

The deal is the first significant evidence of progress in the government's new "defence industrial strategy", which promises to offer protection to key industrial partners.
