Race on for ‘most powerful Speaker in history’

Michael Martin’s successor will be “the most powerful Speaker in history”, a leading Conservative declared on Tuesday, as the jockeying for the post began in earnest within minutes of the historic resignation statement.

“We need a zealot for reform who’s prepared to turn this place inside out and upside down,” said Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader.
