Kingfisher chief slams planned rise in VAT

Ian Cheshire, chief executive of Kingfisher, attacked the planned rise in VAT on January 1 as “spectacularly inconvenient” for retailers as the owner of the B&Q chain announced a 40 per cent rise in interim profits.

He said the timing was unhelpful for shopkeepers, as was the uncertainty over whether the rate of VAT would revert to 17.5 per cent or a higher figure.
