Ruthless Reed in rethink

Reed Elsevier has discovered a ruthless streak, parting ways with Ian Smith, its chief executive of less than nine months.

Seen for much of the past decade as one of the more staid but stable members of a sector better known for its colourful but unstable consumer media brands, events in its boardroom are now forcing a reappraisal.
