Just Fontaine was never meant to play in a World Cup. The man from north Africa was only picked at the last minute for France’s squad of 1958, after somebody else got injured.

Playing in borrowed boots, after his own were damaged, Fontaine scored 13 goals in six games – partly, he says, because opposing defenders knew nothing about him.
