Finland paper crisis deepens

The labour conflict that has paralysed Finland's paper industry for almost six weeks deepened yesterday when a trade union representing 24,000 locked out workers rejected a state-mediated settlement proposal.

The move came as Norway's Norske Skog, one of the world's largest producers of fine quality paper, announced a 6-8 per cent increase in magazine paper prices in Europe from August 1.
