Commodity markets in worst annual fall

Oil and gold rose in the final trading hours of 2008 on Wednesday as investors reflected on the worst year for commodity markets since modern records began.

The Reuters-Jefferies CRB index, which began life in 1956, fell 36 per cent in 2008, a record annual decline.
