Israel’s Labour leader backs early elections

Shimon Peres, leader of Israel’s main opposition party, has called for early elections, following a vote by the ruling Likud party to block efforts to form a coalition with his Labour party.

“The opinion of the Labour party today is to call for new elections and allow the people to decide,” Mr Peres, a former prime minister and foreign minister, said late on Thursday.
