North America: ‘China can’t make what I make’

Tim Timken admits it is anomalous for the Ohio-based steel group he chairs to ship $70m of product this year to the heavily subsidised Chinese market.

US steelmakers may have recovered from the depths of the decline which left a quarter of the industry in bankruptcy protection at the start of the decade, but producers still bristle at the doubling of Chinese imports last year.
