Total and Statoil report big drop in profits

Two of Europe's largest oil companies have reported steep falls in profits for the third quarter but increases in their production of oil and gas.

Total of France announced a drop in post-tax profits of 54 per cent but said that it had stemmed the fall in its production. Statoil of Norway reported a 41 per cent drop in pre-tax income but a 10 per cent rise in its production.
