Asia fails to follow Shanghai surge

Most Asia-Pacific stock markets lost ground on Thursday, despite a near-10 per cent surge in Shanghai that took Hong Kong to a three-month high after Beijing cut taxes on mainland share trading.

Early modest gains for the region evaporated after Credit Suisse reported its first quarterly loss in almost five years as a result of exposure to US subprime mortgages. That sent banking and insurance companies lower.
