Tzipi Livni, Israel’s foreign minister and leader of the centrist Kadima party, on Friday turned down an appeal by Benjamin Netanyahu, prime minister-designate, to join a coalition government with his rightwing Likud party.
The move means he will now almost certainly be forced to put together a hawkish alliance of right-wing, far-right and religious parties that will be deeply opposed to peace talks with the Palestinians.
