Slums in Macao seethe as rents soar

It is a part of Macao few visitors see, a world away from the casinos, cobbled squares and heritage buildings of the former Portuguese enclave.

The territory's northern district, which lies at the neck of a peninsula near the border with Guangdong province, is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Run-down residential blocks and industrial buildings cast deep shadows over a warren of small streets.
