Olympics cast a pall over Shanghai

Shanghai shares fell 4.5 per cent to their worst closing level in 20 months as hopes faded on Friday that measures would be announced to boost China’s market to coincide with the start of the Beijing Olympics.

Rumours of security problems circulated among traders and damped the Olympic euphoria with the Shanghai Composite index falling to 2,605.72 – its lowest close since December 28 2006.
