France cuts outlook on quarterly contraction

France may be doing better than most other large economies but the mood was glum on Friday after official figures confirmed that the economy had shrunk at its fastest yearly pace since records began in 1949.

“The French economy destroyed more jobs in the first quarter – 138,000 – than in the whole of 2008”, said Le Monde, the daily newspaper, citing a survey it had commissioned from PwC, the professional services firm.
