Sewak Singh, a handsome, young Sikh street dentist, sits on his motorbike, waiting for customers next to the Jama Masjid, the main mosque in Old Delhi. Every few seconds, his almond eyes flash up and down the street, looking out for the policemen that demand ever more money to let him ply his trade.
Street dentists are now a source of embarrassment for a country trying to develop a world-class medical tourism industry. Claims that they provide an essential service for the poor are dismissed.
