The vote by Standard Life policyholders to demutualise and float Europe's biggest mutual life assurer marks the biggest change to date in the 181-year history of the Scottish institution.

But the atmosphere and culture of this bastion of Edinburgh's financial establishment have already been transformed by the emergency surgery that it has undergone in the past two-and-a-half years.
