President Nicolas Sarkozy’s trademark informality has become a political liability back home in France. So on Wednesday he appeared to delight in the high ceremony and pageantry that filled the first day of his state visit to Britain.

It was an opportunity to play the role of Republican monarch, which is supposed to be how the French head of state should behave.
