Cuts agreed at secret summer talks

Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling met in secret at each other’s Scottish constituency homes over the summer break to hammer out an agreed line on spending cuts, according to senior government insiders.

The chancellor will on Tuesday set out ideas for public sector reform, as part of the government’s recalibration of its message on spending restraint.
