Drama ‘just not there’ as Brown sees off rebels

Labour party heavyweights weighed in behind Gordon Brown on Monday as the prime minister told a crunch meeting of Labour MPs he was “not making a plea for unity but an argument for unity”.

Passing policemen guarding the entrances, Mr Brown entered a packed meeting of the parliamentary Labour party to the sound of applause and thumping of tables as loyalists mounted a traditional show of unity.
