Iran and Syria accused over Beirut chaos

The scenes of chaos and confusion in Beirut in recent days have worried the Bush administration, which has identified support for Lebanon’s fragile government as one of the chief struts of its Middle East policy.

US officials resist talk that their interests have taken a battering as Hizbollah has sought to assert itself – but at times Washington has appeared little more than a distraught spectator.
