Mike Zafirovski, Nortel's chief executive, is clearly disappointed that his final role at the once-proud Canadian telecoms equipment manufacturer will be to oversee its break-up and piecemeal sale, writes Paul Taylor in New York.

Breaking the company up had "not been the original plan", he told the Financial Times.
