School governor warns on ability to pay fees

The growth in private school fees over the past decade has “outstripped the customer’s underlying ability to pay them”, according to a leading businessman and chairman of governors at a prominent private girls’ school.

Christopher Jonas warned school heads that the recession had created “a time when the total demand for commodities such as ours is likely to be falling, not rising” as he painted a grim outlook at the Independent Schools Council’s annual conference.
