China offers to repair Japanese embassy

Chinese authorities have offered to repair Japan's embassy in Beijing and raised the possibility of compensating restaurants in Shanghai damaged during recent anti-Japanese demonstrations, Tokyo officials said yesterday.

The offers suggest China may be seeking ways to ease tensions raised by the protests, and by disputes between Asia's two biggest economies on issues ranging from history to borders.
