Clouds gather over Spanish hotels

As holidaymakers enjoy the last days of Europe’s traditional summer break, Spanish hotel chains and other tourist-related businesses are enduring one of the worst seasons for more than a decade.

Hit in the domestic market by a sharp drop in tourists from recession-hit UK and Germany – Spain’s two main feeder markets – and by the broader global downturn, some of the country’s biggest leisure groups face heavy losses and severe financial strain.
