Where angels and muscular gods abound

I sometimes think that if Edinburgh is a swan – all pale elegance on top, with webbed feet paddling furiously underneath – then Glasgow is the macaw of cities: colourful, sometimes tough to the point of savagery, intelligent, articulate and compelling.

I have been deliriously happy and desperately sad in Glasgow. I have worked and played there, fallen in and out of love there and I’ve certainly shopped there, since retail therapy has always been my remedy of choice for life’s ups and downs.
