France and US inch closer to UN resolution

France and the US on Wednesday appeared to be inching closer to a UN resolution calling for a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, but Israel said it would not accept a ceasefire until an international force was deployed in the south of the country.

A British official suggested there could be a deal by early next week on a first UN Security Council resolution, which could call for a halt to the violence and lay out the basic parameters for a longer-term agreement.
