Support for Germany's Christian Democratic Union has fallen sharply, a new opinion poll showed yesterday, suggesting that Angela Merkel's opposition party could fail to win a governing majority in September's elections.

The Forsa institute poll showed the CDU and its Bavarian CSU sister party scoring 42 per cent of the votes, down three points in a week and a fall of seven points in two months.
