N Korea to disable main reactor

North Korea has agreed to disable its main nuclear reactor in Yongbyon by the end of October in return for deliveries of fuel oil and other economic aid.

While the fine details of the verification process have yet to be hammered out by a working group, the weekend pledge from Pyongyang following six-nation talks in Beijing is seen as the start of the final phase of a long diplomatic process to denuclearise the communist state.
