Chile’s peso, until recently regarded as one of Latin America’s strongest currencies, plunged on Friday to a five-year low as global financial panic fuelled demand for dollars.

The peso sank to 647.80 per dollar in early trading, compared with Thursday’s close of 611.50, though it recovered some ground later. Earlier this year it had reached 430 per dollar.
