Japan criticised over emissions pledge

A senior Chinese official has dismissed as inadequate Japan’s new pledge for cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases, unveiled on Wednesday.

Taro Aso, Japanese prime minister, told the Financial Times that his country’s targeted reduction of 15 per cent in emissions from 2005 levels by 2020 was “ambitious” and made Japan a world leader in the fight against climate change.
