Sarkozy to benefit from spending surge

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, should be able to count on a surge in consumer spending and a faster rate of job creation this year as he prepares a comprehensive tax reform, according to Insee, the national statistics office.

In a report published on Friday Insee predicts that French households “should enjoy a substantial rise in purchasing power” in 2007 thanks to wage increases, lower inflation and tax cuts.
