Volkswagen chief quits amid bid battle

Bernd Pischetsrieder on Tuesday night resigned unexpectedly as chief executive of Volkswagen, leaving Europe’s largest carmaker in the midst of a restructuring and three-way truck takeover battle.

He will be replaced from the start of next year by Martin Winterkorn, head of VW’s Audi luxury brand, prompting speculation among shareholders that the move was sparked by Porsche, VW’s largest shareholder.
