Dollar falls as US deficit widens

The US dollar tumbled on Wednesday as the US current account deficit widened still further than expected in the fourth quarter of 2004.

The market had been braced for a gap of $183bn, compared to $164.7bn in the previous three months. However the deficit deteriorated to $187.9bn, a record 6.3 per cent of GDP.
