Sarkozy pledges ‘no retreat’ on strikers

Nicolas Sarkozy, French president, went on the offensive on Tuesday over the strikes that have left France gridlocked for the last week, saying he refused to let a minority hold the country “hostage”.

The president broke his week-long silence to take issue with the unions on a day when more than 1m public sector workers went on strike to demand wage increases and protest against his plans to slim down government bureaucracy.
