Writedown concerns weigh on Wall Street

US stocks were weaker on Thursday during another volatile session in which concerns about further writedowns linked to credit market losses spooked the market.

American International Group fell on concerns about its exposure to subprime mortgages. Investors were also troubled by the suggestion that Merrill Lynch may have to make more writedowns in the current quarter. The bank on Wednesday reported $7.9bn in writedowns.
