Political pressure on John Reid, the home secretary, intensified last night when it emerged police had warned ministers three years ago about missing sex offenders.

The disclosure by the Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, followed reports that police forces across the country had lost track of more than 300 convicted sex offenders.
