Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon treaty has dealt a blow to the ambitions of Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Denmark's prime minister, Robert Anderson reports from Copenhagen .

Mr Rasmussen has been furiously burnishing his credentials for one of the top jobs that would be created by the Lisbon treaty: the European Union's new full-time president or its foreign policy chief.
