Seychelles recently began work on a brand-new parliament building on reclaimed land. Artists’ conceptions show a gracious and airy structure incorporating vernacular architectural styles.

But at the groundbreaking ceremony, some guests were startled to see that the foundation stone for the building was inscribed in Chinese. Seychelles’ government accepted the building as a gift from China, to vociferous protests from its critics.
