MoD denies army kit is unsuitable

Bob Ainsworth, defence secretary, on Friday insisted there had been “fantastic improvements” in army vehicles used in Afghanistan after the first British commanding officer was killed in action since the Falklands war.

Lt Col Rupert Thorneloe, commander of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, was killed when his Viking armoured vehicle was blown up on Wednesday in Helmand province.
