Spain poised to give approval for Eta peace talks

The Spanish parliament was preparing yesterday to authorise peace talks with Eta, the outlawed Basque separatist group, in a renewed effort to end more than 30 years of terrorist violence in Spain.

José Luis Rodriguez Zap-atero, the Socialist prime minister, is seeking cross-party support to pursue a negotiated settlement with Eta if the group renounces the use of terrorism.
